World Cup 2026 retrospective · Results checked September 28, 2026
The group stage gave every collection a starting point. The round of 32 gave those pages a different kind of weight. From June 28 to July 3, the 2026 World Cup moved into its first knockout round: 32 teams, 16 matches and a place in the last 16 at stake every time the ball was kicked. Looking back now, this is the chapter where familiar names left the tournament, new possibilities opened up and the album began to read like a record of decisions made under pressure. For collectors, the value of returning to this round is simple: it lets you remember the whole field, including the teams whose stories ended before the closing weekend.
1. Remember the 32 countries that earned their place
Reaching this stage meant surviving the group phase. The list below records the teams that actually played in the round of 32, rather than leaving the bracket filled with qualifying placeholders. That distinction matters when you revisit the tournament after the final: every name belongs to a completed match and a specific place in the story. Give the eliminated teams the same attention in your album as the teams that went further. Their pages preserve the breadth of the tournament, not just its eventual podium.
The 32 participating countries: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, Colombia, Congo DR, Croatia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA.
2. Read the results before following the next bracket
Canada beat South Africa 1–0, Mexico defeated Ecuador 2–0 and the USA won 2–0 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, so all three host nations progressed. Elsewhere, France and Spain each recorded a 3–0 win, against Sweden and Austria respectively. Those results make a useful starting point for revisiting the round, but the full list shows how different the routes to the last 16 could be. A one-goal victory, an extra-time finish and a shootout all produced the same reward: another match.

Advanced from this round: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, England, France, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, USA.
3. Keep the penalty stories separate from the match score
Paraguay eliminated Germany after a 1–1 draw, winning the shootout 4–3. Morocco went through against the Netherlands after another 1–1 draw, with a 3–2 shootout win. Egypt also advanced on penalties, beating Australia 4–2 after the match finished 1–1. Those are three different endings, and they deserve clear labels. The shootout figures sit beside the final match score; they do not become goals added to it. Belgium’s 3–2 win over Senegal and Argentina’s 3–2 win over Cabo Verde, meanwhile, were decided after extra time.
4. Return to the cities that held the first knockout memories
This round stretched across the host cities, from Canada’s win in Los Angeles to Argentina’s extra-time result in Miami. Use Explore City Hub to reconnect the score with its setting: the stadium, the city and the place that fixture occupied in the tournament. The matchday dates have passed, but the city guides can still help you explore those places on a future visit. Temporary fan events and ticket windows belong to the archive; the cities themselves remain worth discovering.
5. Carry the whole round back into your collection
Open Album Collector and use the 32-team list as a deliberate review of your collection. Check the teams you followed closely, then the ones you may have overlooked when the matches were coming quickly. Record your missing stickers before proposing a swap, and keep duplicates organized in Trade Market so the conversation starts with what each collector actually needs. The round of 32 is complete, but a collector’s final remark on it does not have to be about who lost. It can be about preserving the first knockout chapter in full, with room for every country that earned its place.
